From PlantX.net
This is a running log of system events that have occurred.
June 20, 2011 9:10am-9:15am
Main broker service crashed and required restart. Likely attributed to out-of-memory condition.
November 15, 2009 12:10am-7:15am
Server maintenance. Upgraded hard disk drives in database server's data RAID and installed and upgraded application server.
August 19, 2009 8:11-8:28am
A patch required a restart to remove a strict edit on the order item entry. Windows-Java handled a field overflow differently from Linux-Java.
July 12, 2009 12:30pm
Restarted server. A report was run that accessed an index that contains a bad value. It cause the server to allocate an extraordinary amount of memory that caused the server to exceed its resources and stop. We will reorganize the particular index and review the report for any further issues.
July 08, 2009 9:38a-9:52a
One of Verizon's routes to the Internet must have had issues. We could get to some parts of the Internet but not all. This meant that some members could not connect, while others could. Since our phone system uses the Internet it was also impacted by the interruption.
July 07, 2009 3:00pm
Upgraded our Internet connection speeds. We now have 8 times the peek bandwidth. This should alleviate some of the issues posed by the prior overload.
July 06, 2009 1:10pm
System require three consecutive restarts. We are attributing this issue to an overload of both server resources and line speeds. Four large tasks were done all within minutes of each other that caused the issue, follow by a large number of PlantX.net users reconnecting after the initial restart.
- A transaction that updated thousands of supplies.
- A transaction that update thousands of catalog items.
- A broadcast email notification to hundreds of customers
- A mob of customers shopping all at once due to the email
The transactions tied up of the main distribution server creating a bottleneck that held up further transactions. Users could execute transactions, but their responses were at the bottom of a long queue. Sending the responses was slow because of the broadcast email using up the majority of the outbound Internet connection. This was further compounded by a number of customers filling their shopping carts in response to the broadcast email message.
This event is extraordinary, as it is to apt to only occur once a year. In any event, we will look to improve load balancing, in particular, we will make the distribution server send updates to customers in tandem, rather than a single queue, which will result in better response time under heavy load. We will also throttle the outbound email to avoid soaking up all available Internet access.
June 03, 2009 12:30am
Increased the amount of memory allocated to the broker server. Allocating 200MB more memory (a 60% increase) should improve performance and may alleviate the problems encounter in March 11 and June 02. After reviewing the server usage graphs, it appears the main Broker server may have hit a memory ceiling or had been struggling within the allocated resources.
June 02, 2009 3:15pm
Issue with primary broker server forced restart of service. The server had been running continuously since mid March. The outage appears similar to the one that occurred on 3/11.
May 25, 2009 2:15pm to 2:45pm
Lost connection to Verizon fiber. It is caused by numerous data packets being dropped, so much that our firewall could not reestablish a link to Verizon. We continue to investigate. We have replaced the firewall network card.
Update 6/02/2009: Since we continued to drop packets after replacing the network card (1 packet per 16 million), we are now working on the assumption that is the cable that connect our server to the Verizon fiber. Verizon's network cables are too close to their battery backup unit and it is causing interference (RFI). We have run a temporary cable which appears to have eliminated the problem.
March 15, 2009 1:20pm to 1:55pm
Power outage - our server was running fine on battery backup, but Verizon's fiber connection was out. Power came back while we were transferring operations to the backup server, so we continued on the primary server.
March 11, 2009 afternoon
Restarted primary "Root" broker because it lost its connection to server.
