Software as a service (SaaS), also known as cloud software, is a rapidly growing segment of the software industry. PlantX adopted SaaS as its business model, which is in stark contrast to other nursery software vendors. Because of the stark contrast in business models, we don't view software vendors as our competition. We vend information services, not software. We hide the complexities and complications of information technology behind friendly and timely support services. Large software developers, like Microsoft and Oracle, are shifting resources to the SaaS business model.
See Software as a Service vs On-Premise Licensed Software for a quick comparison between the two business models.
This page offers relevant articles that describe the shift from the us-them licensed software to the more synergistic partnership of software as a service.
Reference Articles
This section references a number of articles that define and compare SaaS with the more traditional on-premise, user managed software. In these articles, you will find references to "single tenant" and "multi-tenant", which describe whether the service provider supplies a separate system for each customer or host multiple customers in a single instance. For reference, PlantX was designed from the ground up to be an on-line service, and therefore uses the multi-tenant service model. The multi-tenant model greatly reduces the overhead that is created from maintaining separate, single tenants.
By implementing the multi-tenant SaaS model, PlantX meets all but the highest SaaS "maturity" level as defined by Microsoft. Wikipedia The highest level is applicable for all but the largest Fortune 100 companies or major customer direct retailers.
A blog entry from The Enterprise System Spectator which highlights "a conference call with Timothy Chou, former head of Oracle's On Demand Business". The article does an excellent executive summary of the SaaS model versus the traditional on-premise software model.
Software on demand: attacking the cost structure of business systems
"Today, the problem is not the high cost of hardware but the high cost of software, and especially the management of software. This is the problem that the software on-demand model solves." ... "In conclusion, Chou is not optimistic about the future of many traditional software vendors, many of who will probably not be able to make the transition to the on-demand model."
Salesforce.com is a leader in the SaaS community as they have created a web browser-based CRM (Customer Resource Management) application and sold it as a service.
"Organizations large and small are flocking to the on-demand model for business applications. On-demand is the antidote to many of the IT headaches associated with the traditional on-premise software model. With no software or hardware to buy, install, maintain, or upgrade, the popularity of on-demand grows with IT organizations that are increasingly asked to do more with less."
Immediate Returns
A growing number companies now recognize the immediate returns on investment when they can hit the ground running with no large, up front investment in software licensing, server equipment and the time required to configure both. With PlantX, you give us a call, we create a membership account with a login and you are on your way.
Try out the service for 30 days, if it works for your nursery, pay your monthly fees as you go.
